Fragrant, flavorful and filled with the aromatics of Indian cuisine, Beef Kofta with Saag Aloo is elevated comfort food at its finest.

Beef Kofta is a popular Indian dish and although it sounds fancy, I can easily create this at home. I prepare this recipe with something I always have in my freezer, ground beef. It also includes rich spices like Tandoori Masala or Madras Curry.
I like to serve Beef Kofta with the warm and comforting dish called Saag Aloo, a traditional potato recipe laced with fragrant spices. Pair these two distinctive recipes into one bowl and it becomes a meal that delights the senses.

When my family is requesting meatballs and sauce for dinner, sometimes I change it up a bit and serve this dish. It’s definitely a meatballs with sauce recipe, just not Italian meatballs and red sauce. It makes a lovely variation for my dinner menu and it’s light enough to serve in spring but hearty enough for the cooler months.
During this unusual time, I thought you could use another fairly easy recipe that includes staples like ground beef and potatoes. For me, this dish feels festive and I find it easy enough to whip up, especially on a weekend. I realize the ingredient list looks long, but it’s truly an easy recipe to prepare.
If you make this recipe I’d love to hear your thoughts. As always, leave me a comment or message if you have any questions regarding the recipes on this website or just a general cooking question. I’m always happy to help.
Sending you light, love and peace!

Beef Kofta with Saag Aloo
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons ghee or coconut oil, divided
- 1 sweet onion, chopped, reserve ¼ cup chopped onion
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 4 cloves garlic, minced, reserve 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 3 medium-sized yellow potatoes, cubed into bite-sized pieces
- 1 ½ cups chicken broth, or more if needed
- six ounces baby spinach
- 1-pound ground beef
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoons tandoori masala (or Madras curry powder), divided
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 1 14-ounce can full fat coconut milk
- ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro
Instructions
- In a skillet over medium heat add 2 tablespoons ghee or coconut oil. When the oil is hot add the sweet onion (minus the 2 tablespoons), cumin, turmeric, mustard seeds and cinnamon. Cook until the onions are soft. Then stir in the garlic and cilantro and cook 1 minute longer.
- Stir in the cubed potatoes and then cover the mixture with chicken broth. Turn the heat down to low, cover and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
- While the potatoes are cooking make the meatballs.
- In a large bowl mix together the ground beef, ground coriander, ground garlic powder, ground onion powder, 1 teaspoon tandoori masala, salt and pepper. Once combined make bite-sized meatballs and place them on a baking sheet.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of ghee or coconut oil, using more as needed. When the oil is hot fry the meatballs until cooked through and golden brown. Transfer the meatballs to a platter and reserve.
- Add a teaspoon of tandoori masala, ¼ cup chopped onion and 1 teaspoon minced garlic to the remaining oil in the skillet over medium heat. Cook the onion until soft and then add the coconut milk. Stir over medium heat until it’s thickened a bit. Add the meatballs and ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro back into the coconut milk mixture and stir to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Add the baby spinach to the potato mixture and stir to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Ladle some of the beef kofta into a bowl and top with the saag aloo. Serve warm.
