A few years ago I stumbled onto Maya Wilson’s captivating blog, Alaska From Scratch. Her stories of life in the great northern landscape along with drool-worthy recipes drew me in by the shirt collar and left me dreaming of visiting Alaska.
I quickly became a huge fan of Maya’s work, not only for all the deliciousness she created but for her contemplative and tranquil prose that often made me feel as if I was sitting in her living room chatting over a cup of coffee. I felt as if we’d been long-lost friends re-united.
A few years ago we had a chance to meet in real-time. I love it when you make a friend through the world of food writing and then you actually get to meet in person. Maya is just as authentic in person as she is in her writing. I left our afternoon of conversation and of course, fabulous food, feeling grateful for an unexpected friendship.
When Maya told me she was writing a cook book, my first thought was “it’s about time!”. I knew it would not only enchant readers but comfort their food souls; speaking to everyone who reads it. I think what I love most about the Alaska From Scratch Cookbook is that it is truly Maya’s best work. Her story, her love of food and family and gathering together at the table radiates in every delicious recipe.
Although I dog-eared half the book, I decided to make the Strawberry Shortcake Scones first. This recipe has a soft and delicate crumb with the subtle sweetness of strawberries. When I pulled the baking sheet out of the oven they were fragrant, filling my kitchen with the scent of home. I love that they’re not too sweet and when topped with the glaze they become just a bit more decadent. I made them Saturday and by Monday morning, not one scone was left.
Recipes range from Scallop Tostadas with Corn Salsa and Chipotle Crema to Kenai Cheeseburgers and Jalapeño Popper Macaroni and Cheese. Oh and that’s not all. Maya added a chapter devoted to sips from Alaska. Beverages that will warm and comfort on a cold winter day like the London Fog or help celebrate the warm days of summer like her Sparkling Elderflower Rose.
Alaska From Scratch Cookbook is for every kitchen. It’s a cook book of recipes that will dazzle your family and friends and make gathering at the table a delicious and comforting place to be.
I’ve included the recipe for those tasty Strawberry Shortcake Scones below. I’m also going to be giving away two copies of this beautiful book. Stay tuned because I’ll be posting the giveaway soon. However, if you can’t wait for the book, click HERE to purchase.
