There is nothing like a good roast pork. Mouth-watering delicious, moist and juicy and full of fabulous flavors that have me coming back for seconds. I’m always looking for new, inventive methods to prepare pork and drawing from different types of cuisine is the perfect inspiration.
Because I’m completely in my Asian flavors phase I thought it would be fun to create an Asian style slow roasted pork. I’ve posted several types of pork on this blog including one of my personal favorites “Slow Roasted Mexican Pork”. But I have to tell you, this Asian style slow roasted pork can certainly compete. Simple to prepare and rich with the exquisite flavors of Asia, it melts in my mouth creating a delightful dinner experience.
This recipe works well with a pork shoulder or country-style pork ribs, bone in or boneless. It can also be slow roasted in a slow cooker, or stove top in a Dutch oven. I like to serve this roast with fragrant Jasmine rice or soba noodles.
Warm, comforting and simple to prepare. A perfect meal for a weeknight especially now that school has begun! Keep dinner simple… Enjoy the flavors of life.
Happy Cooking!
Serves 6-8
Ingredients
3-4 lbs pork shoulder, trim excess fat and cut into 4-6 large pieces or use country-style pork ribs, bone in or boneless
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
Salt and pepper
1 cup chicken broth
1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
1/2 cup beer (can substitute with water)
1/4 cup mirin (Japanese cooking wine)
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger
6-8 cloves garlic, smashed and chopped
Dash of sesame oil
1/2 cup green onions, chopped (for garnish)
2 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted (for garnish)
Serve with Jasmine rice, Sticky rice, or Soba noodles
Directions
In a large skillet, place a little bit of oil and heat on medium high. Lightly dust the pork with a little all-purpose flour, salt and pepper and brown. Transfer the browned pork to a slow cooker or platter if using a Dutch oven.
Over medium low heat, add the broth, soy sauce, beer, mirin, brown sugar, ginger, garlic and dash of sesame oil. Saute for a few minutes and then pour over the pork in the slow cooker or add the pork back to the Dutch oven. If using the slow cooker, cover and cook on high for about 4 hours, or cook on low for about 5-6 hours. The pork will be done when it is fork tender.
If using the Dutch oven, cover with the heavy lid and simmer over low heat for about 2 – 2 1/2 hours. Check tenderness and if the meat does not fall apart continue braising for 30 minute intervals. If using bone in pork the cooking time may be longer.
When the pork is done, transfer to a platter, ladle some sauce over the top and garnish with green onion and sesame seeds. Serve with your favorite rice or soba noodles.
Yum!
